Frequently Asked Questions

What is tongue weight and why does it matter?
Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch ball. It should be 10-15% of the total trailer weight. Too little tongue weight causes trailer sway; too much can overload your vehicle's rear axle. This calculator estimates tongue weight at 12% of your max towing capacity.
Can my hitch limit my towing capacity?
Yes. Your actual towing capacity is the lower of your vehicle's rating and your hitch's rating. A half-ton pickup rated for 10,000 lbs with a Class II hitch can only safely tow 3,500 lbs. Always match your hitch class to your towing needs.
What happens if I exceed my towing capacity?
Exceeding your towing capacity puts extreme stress on your transmission, brakes, and suspension. It dramatically increases stopping distance, can cause overheating, and may lead to loss of vehicle control. Most insurance policies also void coverage if you're over your rated capacity.
