Shell Bank Fishing Charters is our test charter in Port Aransas, Texas: a 24-foot bay boat for half days, full days and sunsets, a 31-foot offshore boat, and shared trips by the seat on weekend mornings. Every screen below comes from it, in October.

Half day, full day, sunset: one boat, three trips, each at its own time.

A half day at 6 or 12:30, a full day at 6, a sunset at 5:30, and the phone books a half day at 9.

The bay boat has one page with its three trips and their prices: a half day of four hours for $650, a full day of eight for $1,050, a sunset of three for $450. Each trip is sold only at its own start times: pick the half day and Friday the 30th, and the boat offers 6:00 and 12:30, nothing else.

A party of five shows up for a four-angler trip, and the tip is an awkward moment at the dock.

Four anglers are in the price; the fifth and sixth are $75 each, and there is no seventh. Fish cleaning is $40 for the party, and the crew’s gratuity can go on the booking at 15% or 20% of the trip. A half day for five, cleaned and with 20% for the crew: $895.

30% holds the date. The balance at the dock.

A no-show on a Saturday in May costs the whole day, and a full prepayment scares off the families.

At checkout the charter asks for 30% to hold the date and shows what is left to pay at the dock; the angler can pay it all now instead. The half day for five: $268.50 now, $626.50 at the dock.

Two anglers want a seat, not a boat, and the Saturday morning is sold twice: as seats and as a charter.

On Saturday and Sunday at 6:00 the bay boat goes out as a shared half day: six seats at $165, with the seats left on each morning. The shared trip holds the boat for those hours, so the private charter can’t sell them: on Saturday the 31st a half day starts at 12:30.

The captain plans the week from the boat’s calendar, the shared trip’s list and a notebook, and the open afternoons only show up when the phone doesn’t ring.

Can I set different prices for half-day, full-day, and sunset trips?

Yes. Each trip has its own price and its own start times; the angler picks the trip, then the time.

Can I limit the number of passengers per trip?

Yes. A private trip includes a number of anglers and caps the extras (four and two here); a shared trip sells a set number of seats.

Can I include a weather cancellation policy?

Yes. The policy goes in the terms the angler accepts at checkout; when the captain calls a trip, it moves to another day or the deposit is refunded.

What if my charter business is seasonal?

Trips can be sold only inside their season and closed on the days you don’t fish.

Does every passenger sign the waiver?

Yes. The waiver goes with the booking as a group document: the person who booked signs, and a link lets every other angler sign on their own phone. The booking shows who has, and who hasn’t.

Can I sell a trip as a gift?

Yes: a gift card is a product on your site. It turns into credit for the person it’s for, who books the trip and pays with the code.
