Four hours to a week, on one page.

The phone asks for “a few hours tomorrow”, and the price changes with whoever answers.

The scooter page lists every rate: $35 for four hours and $9 each hour after, $55 a day, $135 for three days, $219 a week, then the Fantasy Fest rates and the weekend rate. The renter picks the pick-up and drop-off times; 10 am to 10 am the next day comes to $55. The damage waiver is a box on the same page, 15% of the rental.

Five hours costs five hours.

Back an hour late, and it’s either a full day or an argument.

After the first four hours each extra hour is $9, until the day rate is cheaper. 10 am to 3 pm comes to $44; from seven hours on, the $55 day rate wins by itself.

Fantasy Fest week, priced for Fantasy Fest.

The busiest week of the year rents at the price of a Tuesday in May.

The festival is a date range, October 23 to 31, and the day and three-day rates have their own price inside it: $75 a day instead of $55. The rate table names the range, so nobody is surprised at checkout.

The weekend rate: Friday at five to Sunday at five.

Weekenders add up two days and a Friday evening, and walk down the street.

A weekly rule: picked up Friday at 5 pm and back Sunday at 5 pm, the scooter is $99 flat, the two-seater $149. Every other length is priced the usual way.

Delivered to the hotel. Free in town, by the mile beyond.

A guest on the Lower Keys calls to ask what delivery costs, and the answer depends on who picks up the phone.

At checkout the address prices the delivery from the road miles between the counter and the hotel: under 3 miles, all of Old Town, it’s free; beyond, $2 a mile, $10 at least, up to 20 miles. A rental house on Sugarloaf Key is 17 miles, so $34: the scooter is there in the morning and collected after. Pick up at the counter is always there.

The agreement and the licence, signed on the phone.

Saturday morning, the counter line is people filling in paper.

Olivia’s booking asks for a signature. The agreement takes the driver’s name, the licence number and state, the date of birth and a photo of the licence. At the counter Olivia only shows the licence.

Back on empty: the refuel fee, on the order.

Scooters come back on empty, and the $15 is forgotten by the time anyone notices.

On the return screen the counter types Refuel, $15, and adds it. Hannah’s order goes from $90.85 paid in full to $15.00 due, with the fee listed on it.

The counter’s day on one screen.

The morning starts with a clipboard: who’s coming, who’s late, who still owes.

Friday at eight in the evening: nine scooters out, the next one back at 10 and the next one out at 9 tomorrow, and Marcus’s walk-in due back. What needs someone comes first: $30 still owed, Tyler’s and Hannah’s refuel fees. Below it, the next seven days by model: three of the six two-seaters are out on Saturday, three to sell.

The day’s money: how it was paid, and who took it.

At closing, the cash drawer, the card terminal and the website never add up.

The transactions report for October 9: Danny’s two walk-ins at the counter, $70 in cash and $228.85 by card, and Priya’s $55 paid online, $353.85 in all, each payment with the name of whoever took it.

Friday at the counter, hour by hour: every plate on its own row.

A walk-in wants two scooters now, and the counter guesses which plates are back from the morning and which are out all week.

The Booking Schedule’s timeline for Friday the 9th, by the hour from 8 to 7, the scooters expanded to their plates: Tyler Brooks on KW-01 from 9 to 1, Marcus Webb’s two on KW-02 and KW-03 from 11 to 3, Sam Patel’s week on KW-04, the two-seaters KW-21 and KW-22 out from 10 and from noon. KW-05 to KW-10 are free all day: the walk-in’s two come from there.

Most scooter shops have a price board on the street and a phone that rings all through lunch.

Conch Coast, the test shop. Yours looks like yours.

Conch Coast Scooter Rentals is a test shop we built for this page; the riders’ names are made up, the phone numbers don’t exist and the photos are generated. Every screen is the system, with the test shop’s October run through it; the two walk-ins in the money report were entered as counter orders by the test shop’s staff login. The road miles on the hotel checkout are a stand-in: the test box has no Google Maps key, so the distance for that address is set by hand; the rate by the mile, the rounding and the price are the system’s own.
