The boat holds twelve, the phone sells fourteen, and half of them need a suit in the right size.

Each Saturday’s boat is a departure with twelve places and the places left. The booking carries nitrox for both tanks, $30 a diver, and a full gear package by size, linked to the rental racks so the same suit is never promised twice. Two divers, nitrox and a package in L: $455.

The Pinnacles take Advanced divers only, and the booking says so.

An Open Water diver books the hundred-foot dive, and it comes out at the dock.

The deep trip asks the booking to confirm that every diver on it holds Advanced Open Water or higher; without the tick, Reserve is refused. Each diver’s own level and card number go on the release they sign (row 03).

Every diver signs: the card on the release, the medical before the boat.

Twelve clipboards at 7 am, a card photo on somebody’s phone, and a “yes” on the medical form that nobody read.

Both documents come with the booking, for every diver: the liability release with the certification level, the card number and a photo of the card, and the diver medical questionnaire. A “yes” on any question opens the physician’s approval, required before the form can be signed. The Delgados’ release is signed by both and the medical by one; Ana answers yes to the question about ears, and the upload appears.

Open Water in one booking: two weekends, six students.

The course is four days over two weekends, and students book the pool and forget the ocean.

The course is one session from Friday 6 pm to the next Sunday, six places, $549: the classroom, two pool days and four ocean dives in one booking, the medical with it. October 23 has two places left; November 13 is open.

The training record, skill by skill.*

The training records are paper in a binder, and a missed skill is nobody’s job to reschedule.

The course sells as one booking, but each student’s progress is sessions and skills: the eLearning, the medical, the pool’s confined-water skills, the four ocean dives, a make-up when an ear won’t clear.

Every tank’s visual and hydro on the list before it’s due.

A tank past its hydro date goes to the fill station, and nobody looks at the stamp.

Each aluminum 80 is a numbered unit with two dated rules: a visual inspection every year and a hydrostatic test every five, counted from the last one logged. The maintenance list shows T-07’s hydro overdue since September 14 and T-15’s visual overdue, T-03 and T-12 due soon, each with Create job beside it.

Tanks to your boat in the harbor. The road miles set the price.

A private boat at Moss Landing wants six tanks on the dock at seven, and the delivery fee is a guess.

At checkout the harbor address prices the delivery from the road miles between the shop and the boat: $2.50 a mile, $25 at least, up to 50 miles; or pick up at the shop. Moss Landing is 24 miles: $60 for six tanks.

The manifest the boat leaves the dock with.*

At 7 am on the dock the divemaster checks names off a printout, asks everyone their level again and finds out who wanted nitrox from the fill log.

One sheet per departure, every diver with the level and the card from the booking, air or nitrox, the party’s rental gear by size and whether the release is signed, and the tanks to fill. Saturday at Point Lobos: 9 of 12 divers, 12 nitrox and 6 air, and Ana Delgado’s release still open. The platform has every piece on the bookings.

Most dive shops keep the boat schedule on a whiteboard and the course dates in a PDF.

Kelp Line Dive Co. is a test shop we built for this page; the divers’ names and card numbers are made up, the phone numbers don’t exist and the photos are generated. Every screen not marked * is the system, with the test shop’s October run through it. The road miles on the harbor checkout are a stand-in: the test box has no Google Maps key, so the distance for that address is set by hand; the rate by the mile, the rounding and the price are the system’s own.
