Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the weight of my cargo?
If you don't know exact weights, this calculator uses industry averages: furniture averages 120 lbs/piece, appliances 200 lbs, landscaping materials 80 lbs per unit, and construction materials 150 lbs per item. For vehicles and ATVs, the average is around 800 lbs. You can always override with your own weight estimate.
What happens if I overload a trailer?
Overloading a trailer causes tire blowouts, axle failure, and can lead to losing control while driving. It also puts excessive strain on your tow vehicle's transmission and brakes. Most states have laws against overloaded trailers, and you can be fined at weigh stations. Always stay within the trailer's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating).
Should I account for trailer weight too?
Yes. The trailer itself has weight (curb weight) that counts toward your vehicle's towing capacity. A typical utility trailer weighs 500-1,500 lbs empty, and an enclosed trailer can weigh 2,000-3,000 lbs. Add the trailer's curb weight to your cargo weight to determine total towing load.
