Frequently Asked Questions

What do wetsuit thickness numbers like 3/2mm mean?
The first number is the thickness of the neoprene on the torso (where you need the most warmth), and the second number is the thickness on the arms and legs (thinner for flexibility). So a 3/2mm suit has 3mm on the torso and 2mm on the extremities. Thicker neoprene means more warmth but less flexibility.
How do I know if my wetsuit is too thin?
Signs your wetsuit is too thin include shivering within the first 15-20 minutes, numb fingers or toes, difficulty concentrating, and wanting to leave the water well before you normally would. If you experience any of these, move up to the next thickness level. Being slightly too warm is always safer than being too cold.
Do I need boots, gloves, and a hood?
In water above 65 degrees F, you generally don't need accessories. Between 55-65 degrees F, boots are recommended and gloves are optional. Below 55 degrees F, boots, gloves, and a hood are all essential. Your extremities lose heat fastest, so accessories make a bigger comfort difference than most people expect.
Should rental shops stock multiple wetsuit thicknesses?
Yes. If your water temperature varies by season, stock the two most relevant thickness ranges. For example, a shop in Northern California should carry 3/2mm suits for summer and 4/3mm for winter. Having the right thickness dramatically improves customer satisfaction and repeat bookings.
