Frequently Asked Questions

How often do scuba tanks need hydrostatic testing?
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires hydrostatic testing every 5 years for all high-pressure cylinders, including scuba tanks. This applies to both aluminum and steel tanks. A certified hydro facility pressurizes the tank beyond its working pressure and measures expansion. Tanks that fail are condemned and cannot be refilled.
What is a visual inspection and how often is it needed?
A visual inspection (VIP) involves removing the valve and physically inspecting the interior of the tank for corrosion, pitting, cracks, or contamination. While not legally mandated by DOT, it is an industry standard performed annually. Most dive shops and fill stations will refuse to fill a tank without a current VIP sticker.
How much does a scuba tank hydro test cost?
A hydrostatic test typically costs $30-$50 per tank. If the tank also needs a visual inspection, add another $15-$25. For rental fleets with multiple tanks, some testing facilities offer volume discounts. Factor these costs into your annual maintenance budget - for a fleet of 20 tanks, you will spend $150-$250 per year rotating through hydro tests.
Can old aluminum scuba tanks still be used?
Aluminum tanks manufactured before 1990 from certain alloys (particularly 6351 alloy) are susceptible to sustained load cracking and should be tested more carefully or retired. Modern aluminum tanks (6061 alloy) have no age limit as long as they pass hydro and visual inspections. However, some fill stations have policies against filling tanks over 15-20 years old regardless of test results.
