Frequently Asked Questions

How is kayak weight capacity determined?
Kayak weight capacity depends on the hull design, length, width, and material. Manufacturers set capacity ratings based on buoyancy testing. Longer and wider kayaks generally hold more weight. Sit-on-top and fishing kayaks tend to have higher capacities than sit-inside models of the same length because of their wider hull design.
Should I load my kayak to its maximum capacity?
No. Most experienced paddlers recommend staying at 65-80% of the rated capacity for the best performance. Loading a kayak to its max makes it sit lower in the water, reduces stability, and makes it much harder to paddle. If you are close to the limit, consider sizing up.
What counts toward the weight capacity?
Everything in the kayak counts: your body weight, clothing, footwear, paddle, life jacket, cooler, tackle box, dry bags, and any other gear. People often forget to include water bottles, fishing equipment, and safety gear, which can easily add 20-40 lbs.
