Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my boat's capacity?
Every boat under 26 feet manufactured after 1972 must have a capacity plate near the helm or transom. It shows the maximum number of passengers and maximum weight. For boats over 26 feet, capacity is based on stability tests and varies by model. Check your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer.
Does the captain count toward the passenger limit?
Yes. The capacity plate includes everyone on board: captain, crew, and passengers. If your boat is rated for 10 people and you have a captain and first mate, that leaves room for 8 passengers. Never exceed the capacity plate rating regardless of conditions.
Why do pontoons hold more people than other boats?
Pontoons have a much larger usable deck area relative to their length because the deck extends nearly the full width and length of the boat. A 22-foot pontoon might hold 12 people, while a 22-foot center console might hold 7-8. The flat, wide deck design gives pontoons a significant capacity advantage.
